MIRI, 16 Dec - Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said that Sarawak is committed to infrastructural development plans to boost tourism and Sarawak economy.

The government is also investing over RM1 billion in constructing a road from Marudi to Long Terawan.

"For the city of Miri, we aim to establish a road network from Mulu to Long Terawan by 2030. The new bridge from Miri to Marudi is expected to be completed by 2024. Additionally, we are investing over RM1 billion to construct a road from Marudi to Long Terawan,” he stated.

Speaking at the inauguration of Hotel Mercure Miri City Centre, he emphasized the endeavor's goal to attract foreign tourists, ultimately fostering the economic development of the region.

"Next year, we anticipate a five percent increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By investing in economic development, I am confident we will achieve our targets by 2030," he added.

In a strategic move to fortify the aviation sector, Sarawak has acquired MASwings, with the vision of establishing a connectivity hub comparable to Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Drawing inspiration from the UAE's success with Emirates Airlines, Abang Johari highlighted the airline's competitive pricing strategy, emphasizing its significant contribution to infrastructure and investment. "Thirty years ago, Dubai was just a desert. Nothing in Dubai until the UAE took Singapore as a model, and today, Dubai is flourishing," he said.

Abang Johari emphasized the Sarawak government's perspective on the MASwings acquisition as an investment rather than an expense.

"Just like building a bridge, you don't ask how much the return is. The same applies to our airline. To measure success, it is based on our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth because once people come in, they will spend money, and our economy will flourish," he added.
